Arizona heat is brutal on charging systems — and a failing alternator in a Phoenix summer isn't an inconvenience, it's a safety problem. Here are the five warning signs, two tests you can do in your driveway, and when to stop driving.

Your alternator isn't the biggest component under the hood, but almost nothing else works without it. It's the small generator that keeps your battery charged while the engine runs and powers everything electrical — headlights, dash, radio, fuel pump, cooling fans, and the air conditioning you cannot do without in a Phoenix summer.

1. Dim or Flickering Lights

Usually the earliest sign. Your headlights look weaker than they should, or they pulse and flicker as you drive. Dash illumination may dim and brighten with engine speed. The cause is simple: the alternator isn't delivering steady current, so nothing electrical gets a stable supply.

A quick test you can do tonight

2. A Battery, ALT, or GEN Warning Light

This light is widely misread. A battery-shaped icon, or the letters ALT or GEN, is not a "your battery is low" indicator — it's a charging system warning. Your car's computer has detected that system voltage is outside the expected range.

  • Flickering on and offarguably worse, because it points to an intermittent failure. The vehicle may seem fine, then quit without warning at the least convenient moment.

4. Grinding or Whining Noises

An alternator spins constantly on internal bearings, driven by the serpentine belt. As those bearings wear, they get loud — and the noise usually arrives before total electrical failure, which makes it a useful early warning.

  • Grinding or rumblingtypically worn internal bearings. The alternator is on its way out mechanically.
  • A whine that rises and falls with engine speedoften points to the alternator or a failing belt, tensioner, or pulley driving it.
  • Squealing on startupfrequently the belt itself — and in desert heat, serpentine belts crack and glaze early, which can leave an otherwise healthy alternator underdriven.

With the hood open and the engine idling, these noises are usually easy to localize to the front of the engine. Keep hands, hair, and clothing well clear of moving belts and fans — and never do this on a hot engine you might touch.

5. Odd Electrical Behavior Across the Car

When available power drops, everything electrical gets slower and stranger. Drivers often chase these symptoms individually before realizing they share one cause.

  • Power windows moving noticeably slower than normal
  • Infotainment or dash screens flickering, dimming, or rebooting
  • A/C blower running weaker than it should — very noticeable in summer
  • Interior lights dimming when you use other accessories
  • Multiple unrelated warning lights appearing at once

A simple check: with the engine idling, switch on several loads at once — headlights, blower on high, rear defroster, windows. If everything sags together, you are almost certainly short on charging capacity rather than dealing with five separate faults.

How to Test Your Alternator With a Multimeter

A basic multimeter costs around $20 and gives you a real answer in a couple of minutes. This is the single most useful DIY check on this page.

    Set the meter to DC volts

    look for V with a straight or dashed line, not the wavy AC symbol. The 20V range is right for automotive work.

    Test the battery with the engine off

    red lead to the positive terminal, black to negative. A healthy resting battery reads about 12.4 to 12.7 volts. Below about 12.2 means it is significantly discharged.

    Start the engine and read again

    with the alternator working, voltage should rise into roughly 13.8 to 14.8 volts. That increase is the charging system doing its job.

    Add some electrical load

    turn on headlights and the blower. Voltage should stay above about 13 volts. A reading that sags well below that under load points to a failing alternator.

    Interpret the outliers

    no rise above resting voltage means it likely is not charging at all. Consistently above about 15 volts means the voltage regulator is overcharging, which cooks batteries and damages electronics — that needs attention just as urgently as undercharging.

What a multimeter cannot tell you

Voltage confirms whether the system is charging. It does not tell you whether the alternator, the belt, the voltage regulator, a corroded ground, or a parasitic drain is responsible. A proper charging system test measures output under controlled load and checks for AC ripple from failing diodes — which is where an accurate diagnosis actually comes from.

Alternator or Battery? Telling Them Apart

These two get confused constantly, and replacing the wrong one is a common, avoidable expense. A rough rule of thumb:

  • Trouble starting, but fine once runningpoints more toward the battery. It lacks the punch to crank but the alternator carries the car afterward.
  • Starts fine, then dies or degrades while drivingpoints toward the alternator. The battery had enough for one start; nothing is replenishing it.
  • Dims, flickers, and electrical weirdness while drivingstrongly suggests charging system rather than battery.
